Stuck in a Rut was founded by Dave Dutton and Kyle Dutton.

Dave Dutton spent the past twenty years as an executive overseeing thousands of employees. During that time, it never ceased to amaze him how many people seemed to be boxed into a particular job for their entire lifetime when it seemed they were capable of much more. It especially bothered him when he saw ultra-creative people behind a desk shuffling papers. They seemed to get branded by a job title they fell into, and that brand stayed with them forever. They actually became their job title even though it had absolutely nothing to do with who they were. This phenomenon seemed to limit an employee's creative capability to do even more for the company than they were already doing.

He found that most of his friends and business associates were in a similar situation. Most were relatively successful in their career and had a lofty job title, but their identity seemed to be entirely tied to their job title. They had no clue who they really were or what made them tick.

He also found many were forced to become somebody completely different at work than they were at home. They were counting down the days until retirement so they could resume being themselves all day every day.

Through experimentation with his friends and family of all ages and backgrounds, Dave found a way to drill down and find anybody's Given Talent in the space of about ninety minutes. He saw how that discovery in others helped them clarify their natural born abilities in both their work and play world. He started the company after he witnessed over and over again how truly transformative it was when a person's Given Talent was uncovered.

That was how Stuck in a Rut started...out of an application of Dave's Given Talent and extreme curiosity.

Dave Dutton

Dave is someone who turns complexity into simplicity. For as long as he can remember, he has been totally fascinated by complex people, processes and things and what makes them tick. Without even thinking about it, he is able to see through complexity and find the core essence of whatever he is looking at. He loves finding simple lasting answers to really tough, complex problems. That’s his Given Talent.

In addition to Stuck in a Rut, Dave uses his Given Talent in his love of the outdoors, especially fly fishing, white water rafting and golfing. He also loves to travel to far off mysterious places where he can sit back and watch complex people, processes and things (and use his Given Talent doing that, of course.)

Kyle Dutton

Kyle Dutton is co-founder and works on a consulting basis for university applications of the product. He is someone who is an experiential team builder. He is constantly in search of all encompassing challenge that push him, the more the better. He uses those experiences to relate to others and help them to push themselves just as hard. His life is truly a constant full body learning experience.

After graduating from University of Denver with a degree in marketing, he returned to Portland to help Dave pursue his passion at Stuck in a Rut.

In his free time he loves exploring those all encompassing experiences he explores with others. Whether it be reading about Aron Ralston’s adventure (Hiker who cut his own arm off in a slot canyon and escaped alive) or taking an adventure of his own, he loves trying new things. Currently his passions surround fly fishing, rafting, camping, hiking, backpacking, and pretty much anything in the outdoors. One of his favorite experiences was a 22-day Outward Bound backpacking adventure through the Alaskan Wilderness where he and his team learned to survive on a glacier for two weeks without outside assistance, bears and all.

Every one of our employees and others we work with are having fun doing what they are doing for us, or they wouldn’t be with us.

Here is what our customers are telling us.....

Merrill W. – Harvard Business School Grad

Stuck in a Rut's unique process for divining given talent and then using that knowledge to change a life is worth ten times the price.

Charles F. – Administrative Assistant done with Pretending

As I am fast becoming a lousy Great Pretender, I am grateful to have found you and The Clarifier process. I wish I could remember more about the experience because I doubt I will ever have another one like it.

Rory L. - Customer Service Representative looking for R&D work

I always kind of knew how I think, but I've never been able to describe it to anybody because it seems so complex. It was mind boggling how quickly you guys were able to drill down and tell me exactly how I think in more detail than I ever thought possible. It was amazing! You nailed it!

Nancy C - Life Coach happy in her job

You don't know how much this is helping me. It gives me a new sense of myself. Your process lets me find out who I am in a fun setting and be totally OK with it.

Romano L. - Tech Specialist looking to get out

I have been working with Dave from the Stuck in a Rut and it has been great. You will find a friend; who really wants to help and takes joy in helping. His help and advices would probably cost hundreds or thousands in the open market.

Brian R. - College student majoring in science

I shared my Given Talent with my parents and family and they all thought it was dead on.

Bianka S. – Student who chose nursing as a career

It seems as though my talent is going to be playing itself out this summer. I am going to be taking the assistant nursing class and getting certified so I can do that this summer in a rehab center! I am so excited.

Mike M. - Insurance Consultant

BINGO!!! You nailed it right on the head! That’s is really where my strengths and talents meet.

Stacey H. – Re-entering the work force after returning to school

I am so excited about this process...and that is a huge understatement. The process was calming, relaxing, stimulating, inspiring, and fun. I feel like an onion… you gently allowed the dry exterior that the rest of the world sees to fall off and then gave me the tools to look at each layer carefully on its own merits.  As I remove and evaluate each layer, I find things that were running just below my level of consciousness.

This is all sinking in and I am seeing evidence of what you spoke of ALL OVER the place!   AMAZING!
